Hyper-V export, Server 2012 R2, non-domain, to Samba share on Ubuntu 14.04

Fails with "Export failed for virtual machine 'hostname'".

I'm trying to use Hyper-V export to back up my VMs to Samba 4.3.9-Ubuntu, to a wide-open share. Both ends are non-domain.

There's some tantalising information online that Hyper-V explicitly checks for some flag that Samba doesn't implement when it has negotiated > SMB2_02, but when <= SMB2_02, this flag isn't checked for, and while it is unsafe, it at least works.

However, server max protocol = SMB2_02 in my smb.conf doesn't permit this to work!

Does anyone export their Hyper-V VMs to Samba?
