kvm and libvirt on debian stretch not working

I'm running Debian stretch and wanted to install kvm and virsh using the Debian wiki here mostly. libvirt-bin is not available in the stretch repos and seems to have been replaced by libvirt-clients.

The following results in an error:

apt-get install qemu-kvm libvirt-clients # installs packages with no error adduser myuser kvm virsh list --all

This causes the following error (run as sudo):

error: failed to connect to the hypervisor error: no valid connection error: Failed to connect socket to '/run/user/1000/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory

Most guides also say that I should add myuser to the libvertd group, however it doesn't exist. On a site I can't find anymore (restarted the computer to see if this had an effect... it didn't) it said from memory that this wasn't required for recent version.

Do I need to install other packages or is does the configuration needs fixing?
