PostgreSQL 8 Beta Released

PostgreSQL has made the leap from 7.4 to 8 Beta with several new features of interest. Front and center to many will be the native Windows support. Prior to this release the database platform only ran on Windows within Unix emulation under Cygwin. PostgreSQL can run as a service and supports Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, XP and 2003.

Additional features include the ability to control what filesystems hold databases, indexes and more. This feature, known as tablespaces, can improve system performance.

A utility called Point-In-Time recovery has expanded backup capabilities to provide ongoing restore points for easier recovery from hardware failure.
